Shawn Roof: News from Double-A

I always enjoy getting emails especially when they come from former Illini players.  Shawn Roof updated me on his latest since he got promoted to the Tigers’ AA squad, the Erie Seawolves.

Roof is enjoying the slightly cooler weather in Erie, PA (compared to Single-A weather in Florida, at least).  However, the biggest change is everyone is that much better at the higher level.  "The defenses are unbelievable, and you really have to earn your hits."  Pitchers are learning to work the counts better too, apparently.  Roof says, "Unlike before if you’re ahead in the count you’ll see a fastball, but now you see more 2-0 curveballs, and 3-2 curveballs."

A big highlight for Roof recently was when the Seawolves got a chance to face big leaguer Fausto Carmona.

He had a pretty good sinker and induced a lot of ground ball outs, but he sure didn’t overpower us like I thought he would, so that was cool to see that you can hang in there against guys like that.  I had a infield base hit off of him.  I hit a chopper up the middle, and he jumped up and knocked it down but I beat it out.
Shawn did have a bit of bad news.  Former Illini and Oriole draft pick Kyle Hudson is out with a broken hand.  Hud looks to be back in a couple weeks.

I want to say that though I relate a lot of baseball related stuff from Shawn, I should mention he never neglects to ask about me and the family.  One of the nicest guys I know.

Good luck Shawn!!

Hudson off to a good start with the Aberdeen Ironbirds

The 2008 Illini draftees have made a good impression so far in the minors. If the first couple weeks are any indication, they are in the pros for a while.

Former Illini and All-Big Ten centerfielder Kyle Hudson is at the Orioles’ A farm team in Aberdeen.  He’s already off to hot start.  He’s hitting .280 (7 for 33) with 5 rbis with 7 walks.  As he did with Illinois, Kyle is playing centerfield.

Scott Shaw, who was drafted by the Mets, is spending time with the Brooklyn Cyclones.  In two starts and one relief, he’s allowed two just runs in 14 innings.  In those 14 innings, Shaw’s KOed 18 batters.

Interestingly, one appearance (the relief in which Shaw got the win) was against Hudson’s team, the Aberdeen Ironbirds, but Shaw didn’t have the pleasure of facing off against his old teammate.

Finally, for those who remember the Illini from before this year, Tanner Roark was a All-Big Ten second team starting pitcher in 2007.  Thanks to Tanner, we won the first game in the 2007 Big Ten Tournament against Iowa.  Well, Roark was declared ineligible in 2008 because of his academics.

That didn’t stop the Texas Rangers from taking a flier on Tanner in this year’s draft.  And so far, he’s looking pretty good in the Rangers’ team in the Rookie League in the Arizona League.  Roark has been put in the role as reliever in three games.  While three games and five innings is a small sample size, he hasn’t allowed a run yet and has struck out six batters while walking no one.

Good luck to all!

Three Illini Signed

Some news regarding Illini draftees:

It came out today that Illinois CF Kyle Hudson who went early, the fourth round, has reached a contract agreement with the Baltimore Orioles.  He plans to play for their Class A team in Aberdeen, MD by next week.

Illini hurler Scott Shaw, drafted by the New York Mets in the 13th round, has signed a contract with them complete with a $30,000 signing bonus.

Tanner Roark who started for the Illini until he was forced off the team this year because of academic ineligibilty, was signed by the Texas Rangers.  The Rangers drafted Roark in the 25th round.

Congrats to all three!

Shaw facing off against Michigan at the 2008 Big Ten Tournament

The scouts must have been paying attention during the Illinois-Michigan game at the Big Ten Tournament because Illinois pitcher Scott Shaw was chosen #404th overall in Friday’s MLB’s first-year player draft.  Though Shaw lost that Michigan game, he pitched a heck of game.

Shaw was chosen by the New York Mets with the pick and was the second Illini picked in this year’s draft.  CF Kyle Hudson was picked by the Baltimore Orioles in the 4th round during the first day of the day.

Also of Illini note, former pitcher Tanner Roark was selected by Texas.  Roark was set to be Illinois’ top starter this year but was dropped from the team due to academic ineligibility.  He was picked #753 overall.

Congrats to both of them.

Illinois’ Hudson chosen 116th overall in today’s draft!

Hudson went in the 4th round today

Before I get on to the overall draft, I want to extend congratulations to University of Illinois CF Kyle Hudson.  He was chosen 116th overall by the Baltimore Orioles in the fourth round of today’s baseball draft.

As a junior, I guess the ball is in his court as to whether he signs or continues with the Illini.  That said, with this high of a pick, I wouldn’t be surprised if we see Kyle in the Orioles’ farm system soon.

Congratulations to Hud and his family!

Purdue’s Josh Lindblom was the highest Big Ten player picked today.  He was chosen #61 overall by the Dodgers.  Also picked from the Big Ten was Penn State’s Drew O’Neil (#120 by the White Sox), Purdue’s Ryne White (#138 by the Dbacks), Michigan’s Jason Christian (#154 by Oakland), Michigan’s Zach Putnam (#171 by the Indians) and J.B. Shuck (#182 by the Astros).

Hudson awaiting Draft Day

Speed is one of Hudson’s assets.

University of Illinois CF Kyle Hudson will be watching draft day intently tomorrow.  No doubt, he’ll be snatched up by the time everything’s done.  Where he goes is anyone’s guess but some say he may go as high as the 3rd round.

Hudson ended the 2008 campaign with 40 steals and a.398 batting average.  It may be his .498 OBP that looks good to scouts though.

The local college rag, The Daily Illini, had a nice feature article on Hud.  One thing I didn’t know about him… he’s a Cubs fan.  Awesome!

Illini Martin, Reeser mow down Cardinals

Illinois 1 Lamar 0

CSTV’s Gametracker pitching line says it all

It was another pitcher’s duel this morning at the Al Ogletree Tournament but this time Illinois came up on top.

Aaron Martin and Ben Reeser were lights out against the Lamar University Cardinals just as were all summer as teammates in the Coastal Plain League.  They combined for a six hit shutout with seven strikeouts.

That was fortunate since the offense was still a bit lean and provided them with the one run they needed to win.  That run came in the bottom of the 5th (the Illini were the home team today) when Kyle Hudson singled, stole second, and scored on a Brandon Wikoff base hit.

That was Hud’s third stolen base in the first three games of the season.  Wikoff had two hits to go along with his rbi in the game.

That closes out Illinois’ participation in the Al Ogletree Tournament.  After winning the first against Sam Houston 6-4, they lost 2-1 against Texas State.

Wrap-up and Analysis of the Tournament:

As much as I like Gametracker, it is certainly no replacement for being at the game.  You just don’t get a feel for the game and there is so much that you miss.  I am so much looking forward to Illinois’ home opener.

That said, I think it’s safe to say that the pitchers were on their game this weekend.  Opponents scored five earned runs in three runs in the three games.  Take away the four run inning in the first game against Sam Houston, and well.. you do the math.

The offense is another matter and that will probably come with time.  Some of the problem is due to rookie mistakes and the team learning to gel.  We have some new guys being put in some key roles and they are learning to produce.

Freshman Casey McMurray is playing leftfield and has been leading off.  Transfer John Schlichter is playing the hot corner and batting in the cleanup spot.  Both made offensive contributions this weekend.

Coach Hartleb spoke to the media about the lack of offense after the 2-1 loss to Texas State:

“I was disappointed with the offense today,” Hartleb said. “We had numerous opportunities to move runners with no outs, but we didn’t do it and that was the difference in the game. If we move runners at all today, we’re 2-0.”

My guess is that he’ll be working on the offensive fundamentals this week.  That said, he’s not feeling too bad about winning two out of three this weekend.

By the way, here is the typical lineup being used:

McMurray, Casey lf
Wikoff,Brandon ss
Hastings, Ryan 1b
Schlichter, John 3b
Webb, Daniel rf
Johnson, Aaron c
Giller, Mike dh
Bonadonna, Joe 2b
Hudson, Kyle cf

Illinois’ next game will be against Baylor on February 29th.
