Pat Digs Baseball

My two kids like to watch Wheel of Fortune. It’s become a routine to turn on the TV at 6:30 and watch it every night. As game shows go, it’s not too bad and helps the kiddos with their ABC’s. You’re probably wondering where I’m going with this. Well, it turns out host Pat Sajak … Continue reading “Pat Digs Baseball”

You’re probably wondering where I’m going with this.

Well, it turns out host Pat Sajak is a big baseball fan (I noted earlier that he is financing a minor league in California). Last week they were broadcasting the show from Kansas City, Missouri. On Friday night at the end of the show, they spent a good two minutes talking about the Negro League Baseball Museum located there in Kansas City. They included some footage of Pat walking through the museum that week pointing out some of the highlights.

Very cool.

Sox, Garland Continue Winning Streaks

Jon Garland ended his scoreless inning streak but I’m sure it’s ok with him. The White Sox still won 10-7 over the Jays and he managed to still get the win. The Sox have now won seven straight. The win makes Garland 6-0 tied with Dontrelle Willis for the MLB lead. Garland can thank Paul … Continue reading “Sox, Garland Continue Winning Streaks”

Garland can thank Paul Konerko who broke a streak of his own. Paulie was 0 for his last 26 at-bats entering this game. He hit 2 homers and drove in five runs.

Saving Grace

Kudos to Trevor Hoffman who just reached the 400 save mark today. In the Padres 6-5 win against the Cardinals, he retired the side in order to reach the historic mark. Those with 400 saves: Lee Smith 478 John Franco 424 Trevor Hoffman 400

Nothing’s Stoppin’ the Train

Dontrelle Willis won today to up his record to 6-0, best in majors. He defeated the Rockies to extend their losing streak to 9 games. Jon Garland isn’t far behind at 5-0. He has his chance tomorrow against the Blue Jays. Not only that, he’s got a 23 inning scoreless streak going Also of note … Continue reading “Nothing’s Stoppin’ the Train”

Also of note today, Jamie Moyer lost his first of year. He’s now 4-1. Well, it couldn’t last forever but here’s one Moyer fan that hopes he keeps going strong throughout the season.

5/5 Linescore of the Day

Guess who’s given up the least so far this year?

That’s right.. Minnesota.

They’ve given up only 41 walks in 28 games. The Red Sox are second with 72. That’s quite a difference.

Without looking it up, anybody care to guess which team has the most?

No, it’s not the Cubs. They’re second with 125.

Illini Beat Salukis 9-7

Chalk up another victory for Illinois as they overcame Southern Illinois in extra innings 9-7. Aaron Saving (nice name for a reliever, eh?) got the win by pitching a 1-2-3 10th. Toby Gardenhire doubled in the go-ahead run. In case you’re wondering, Toby is indeed the son of Ron Gardenhire. The Illini remain in first … Continue reading “Illini Beat Salukis 9-7”

The Illini remain in first place, 2 games up on Minnesota.

Big Ten standings here

Big four game set against Northwestern this weekend here in Champaign. Maybe I’ll catch a game or two.

Pitching Milestones

I was browsing through MLB.com’s Milestone Tracker for pitchers and noticed that Buddy Groom just tied Ron Reed for 36th all time in Games Pitched. I know it’s due to the trends in use of relievers in today’s baseball but it’s hard for me to believe that Buddy Groom would be 36th all-time in anything.

Life is Good

Just got back from the Cell where the White Sox completed a sweep of the Kansas City Royals with a 2-1 win. Just got back from the Cell where the White Sox completed a sweep of the Kansas City Royals with a 2-1 win. While the Northsiders lost another heartbreaker to the Milwaukee Brewers which completed their series in which they were swept. Ozzie Guillen, the Town Clown, as some baseball “experts” refer to him, didn’t panic when his team couldn’t get anything going against young phenom Zack Greinke. He stuck with his team, which has had the lead in every game this year, and watched KC young relievers walk in the tying & go ahead runs. And then stayed with his closer Shingo Takatsu, who was shaky, but got the job done in the 9th. While Dusty Baker, baseball genius, not in my book, couldn’t stay awake long enough to motion for his pitcher to put Carlos Lee on with first base open and the winning run on 2nd. Of course Lee singled home the game winner. I don’t know which is sweeter, the White Sox winning, the Cubs losing, or the babes at the Cell on a hot hot hot Cinco de Mayo. HAPPY CINCO DE MAYO BABY!!!
