Around since 1993, Floyd has never really blossomed into the superstar they thought he might be but for the most part he’s been a solid hitter. He did put a few good years together. In 2001, he batted .317 with 31 homers, 44 doubles while scoring 123 and driving in 101.

Not too shabby tonight either.

MLB Draft Begins Tomorrow

Tomorrow the 2005 MLB Draft will commence. The Arizona Diamondbacks have the first pick and claim to have narrowed their pick to three pitchers and some shortstop named Justin Upton. Maybe this one can field.

As for myself, I will be watching to see what happens to catcher Chris Robinson. He will most likely be the top Illini picked. Here is what mlb.com has in their scouting report:

Sturdy, durable catcher’s body. Stocky, broad shoulders. Barrell chest, strong lower half. Great opposite field power. Line drive stroke. Excellent, vocal leader that takes charge of the pitching staff. Exceptional make-up.

From what I have seen of him this spring, it’s all true.

Other Illini that have good chances to be picked are Dusty Bensko, Ryan Rogowski, Jimmy Conroy, and Drew Davidson.

Barmes injured during food run

The latest to succumb to injury is hot Colorado shortstop Clint Barmes who has fractured his left collarbone. This was due to a “dummy” injury which I categorize as any injury I could easily inflict myself. See Moises Alou and the treadmill incident a few years back. It’s reported Barmes who was carrying groceries, couldn’t … Continue reading “Barmes injured during food run”

It’s reported Barmes who was carrying groceries, couldn’t wait for the elevator then tripped while walking up the stairs.

Barmes will likely be out for 12 weeks.

Urbana HS Baseball… Full o’ Smarts

There was an article about the Urbana High School baseball team in our local News-Gazette’s Commentary (not the Sports) section I found interesting. I wish I could provide a link but the N-G doesn’t put many of their articles on the web. Anyway, I’ll summarize. The Tigers posted an 11-19 record this year. The Tigers posted an 11-19 record this year. Pretty dismal unless you consider that 11 of those losses were by two runs or less.

But that’s not the point of this article. Apparently, all 17 players won Big 12 Conference Scholar Athlete awards. To win this award, one must be a sophomore, junior or senior, earn a varsity letter and have a 4.0 grade point average.

In addition, 14 won Illinois High School Association scholastic achievement awards. These go to juniors and seniors who maintain a 4.5 GPA.

Very impressive. Kudos to Coach Steve Waller who understands priorities of young student-athletes. In his words:

“As a coach, you always stress that schoolwork comes first, that without school, there is no baseball. That’s what is going to carry them into the future. These guys know that academics is serious.”

I’ve got a joke for you.. this year’s All-Star Voting

You gotta wonder if anyone who votes for All-Stars even looks at how the players are doing (or if they’re playing at all). This year’s voting re-enforces my notion that voting should be left to managers, players, sportswriters, anyone who has a clue. Yes, it’s the fan’s game and they ultimately pay the the salaries … Continue reading “I’ve got a joke for you.. this year’s All-Star Voting”

Yes, it’s the fan’s game and they ultimately pay the the salaries of the players… I’ve heard the arguement before. But why is Garciaparra with his 51 at-bats leading the NL shortstops in the balloting?

Why he’s even still on the ballot instead of Neifi Perez I don’t know. Unfortunately, it looks like the Neifi! write-in campaign isn’t working.

This definitely a situation where democracy is NOT working.

Players Sing it Out

Good Sports Recordings has put out CD of some current and former MLB players singing (and rapping) their favorite tunes. They’re now selling it to the public with a portion of the profits going to the players’ favorite charities. The biggest name is Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith who probably had some coaching from his American Idol son Nikko. Some other on the CD include Omar Vizquel, Coco Crisp, Sean Casey and Aubrey Huff.

David Pinto from Baseball Musings forked over the $17.99 (plus s+h) to check it out. According to David, musical masterpiece this is not. It might be worth the cash for the kicks and giggles just the same. Check out his review.

6/3 Linescore of the Day

Preston Wilson, Colorado Rockies 4 for 5, 2B, 2 HR, 2 runs, 3 rbis It’s not often you find a Rockies player in the LSOTD at least in a good way. PDub helped spur Colorado to a 12-4 victory over the Reds.

Not to sound like a broken record but this Kyle Davies guy… is he for real?

Atlanta rookie starter Kyle Davies continues to impress anyone paying atention. Today against the Pirates, he went 7 2/3 allowing no runs. Relatively speaking, he didn’t dominate rather he spread out 6 hits and 4 walks. All the same, no runs. Unfortunately for him, he didn’t get the win. Reliever John Foster got the win … Continue reading “Not to sound like a broken record but this Kyle Davies guy… is he for real?”

Unfortunately for him, he didn’t get the win. Reliever John Foster got the win when greybeard Julio Franco drove in the winning run with an rbi double in the top of the 9th.

For the season, Davies has allowed 2 earned runs in 23 1/3 innings.

Nighttime Out West

According to this article on Bleed Cubbie Blue, this is only the fifth time the Cubs have played six or more straight night games on the West Coast. The last time it has happened was 1983 when they were swept by the Padres and lost 2 of 3 to LA. Looks like they have a … Continue reading “Nighttime Out West”

Looks like they have a chance to reverse that record this time if they can win tonight.
