There is a Lee/Pujols discussion going on over at Baseball Musings with 27 comments and counting.

Now all my baseball friends know two things about me:

  1. I am a die-hard Cub fan
  2. Albert Pujols is my favorite active player

If I based my vote on loyalty, this would put me in a bind.  Fortunately, I’m able to look past loyalty and and vote for the firstbaseman who deserves it.

Both Lee and Pujols are having All-Star seasons and let’s face it, both will see time in the game.  As for who gets my vote, it has to be Derrek Lee.  One poster on Baseball Musings put it quite succinctly.  What more can Lee do?  He leads the NL in BA, rbis, HR and is second in runs and doubles.  And something that goes unnoticed, he has 10 stolen bases in 12 attempts.

Lee’s value to his team is unmeasurable.  Without Lee, the Cubs would be floundering in 3rd or 4th place in the NL Central.  Yes, Pujols contributes much to the Cardinals.  He also has a lineup that protects him.  Something that Lee doesn’t always have.

I love Albert Pujols.  He is no doubt the better firstbaseman over the long haul.  He will have the better career.  I will go out on a limb and predict that barring injury or scandal, Albert will have a career worthy of Cooperstown (and I will be there when he is inducted).

But he is not this year’s All-Star.  That honor should go to Derrek Lee.

D Lee has my vote.  How about you?

Goat Brings Cubbies Luck, Win

This is something you just don’t see everyday in Wrigley Field.  My buddy TDChitown went to the Cubs/BoSox game on June 10.  There just a few rows ahead of him, some Cubs fans had smuggled a live goat into the stadium. Apparently, these guys had T-shirts made in anticipation of the event.  In any case, the … Continue reading “Goat Brings Cubbies Luck, Win”

Ohio Youth Team Booted for Winning Too Much

The Columbus Stars, a team in a rec youth league in the Columbus, Ohio area, was kicked out of the league. They weren’t caught cheating. No one was using illegal substances. The Columbus Stars, a team in a rec youth league in the Columbus, Ohio area, was kicked out of the league. They weren’t caught cheating. No one was using illegal substances. Every kid was within the proper age limit. They were just too good. After winning games by scores of 18-0, 13-0 and 24-0, opposing teams began complaining.

“After hearing and seeing the scores from that group, I called up the league office and said, ‘No way are we going to play them,’ ” said Terry Morris, who coaches one of three teams from Bloom-Carroll schools in Fairfield County. “I wasn’t going to subject my players to that.”

It seems the Stars’ players were a little disappointed. I particularly liked the quotes from the kids themselves.

“I don’t think it’s fair,” said Michael Allston, 12, a catcher and pitcher for the Stars. “We always played our best, and we were just winning games.” Teammate Matthew “Boomer” Hufferd, 12, who plays second base, said he thinks overprotective adults are to blame. “If they learn at their age that they can forfeit on things they don’t want to do, it’s quitting,” Hufferd said.

The Stars haven’t played a league game since June 6 though a scrimmage has been arranged with a team in another league.

Columbus Dispatch Story

Update:  Commentor rhinten brings a different perspective to this story.  According to rhinten, it’s quite likely this team is a “travel” team and therefore playing at a much higher caliber than your normal youth rec league.  Read the comments section for more detail.  Thanks to rhinten for bringing this up.

BEAUTIFUL WEEKEND

What a BEAUTIFUL weekend, especially if you’re a White Sox fan! The Sox were given the opportunity to avenge the 1959 World Series loss to the Dodgers sweeping them three straight. What a BEAUTIFUL weekend, especially if you’re a White Sox fan! The Sox were given the opportunity to avenge the 1959 World Series loss to the Dodgers sweeping them three straight. Hey at least the 1959 World Series was still in my lifetime (barely, I was born in 1956). Does anybody know why Al Lopez chose not to start Billy Pierce in the 59 Fall Classic?

The BEAUTIFUL weekend started with a 6-0 Friday and featured thrilling come from behind victories on Saturday & Sunday. Los Angeles was one strike away from a win on Saturday. Carl Everett lined an 0-2 Yhency Brazoban pitch into rightfield for an RBI single cutting the deficit to 3-2. Pinch runner Willie Harris stole second base, more like a gimme as there wasn’t even a throw. Then Aaron Rowand bounced one up the middle plating Harris to tie the score. And then A.J. Pierzynski fouled off a few before launching a walk off shot over the centerfield wall. Small ball at its finest!

Sunday’s comeback pails in comparison, but it was a comeback win none the less. Trailing by one in the bottom of the eighth the Ozzie Guillen sent up Frank Thomas to bat for Juan Uribe. Pablo Ozuna was sent in to run for the Big Hurt who drew a base on balls. Scott Podsednik laid a bunt down in front of home plate which catcher Jason Phillips threw to first was in the dirt. Secondbaseman Jeff Kent dug it out, but the umpire ruled Kent’s foot was off the bag (even though replays showed otherwise). The Sox had two on with nobody out. Willie Harris bunted perfectly moving both runners into scoring position. Mr. Clutch Aaron Rowand ripped a single scoring both runners. Dustin Hermanson walked the leadoff batter in the 9th, but induced a 6-4-3 DP and got the last guy for the save.

While this drama was taking place on the Southside of Chicago the Northsiders were getting broomed by the Bronx Bombers in a three game sweep 9-6, 8-1, & 6-3. Oh what a BEAUTIFUL weekend!

Is it me or is the All-Star balloting ship seem to be righting itself somewhat?

Specifically, LA shortstop Cesar Izturis is now leading in the NL. He is a legitimate candidate. He’s hitting .304. And he’s not on the DL.

Ken Griffey Jr is no longer in the top 3 in NL outfielders, thank goodness. I have to give Junior credit where credit is due. He’s stayed healthy up until this point unlike previous years. But that’s not enough.

Mike Piazza, Carlos Beltran, and Tino Martinez are leading their respective positions for one reason… they play in New York. The case can be made for Piazza that his position is a weak one in the NL this year but surely there’s a better one. Barrett?? Hernandez??

Don’t count out Mark Teixeira out for catching Tino in the polls. He’s been gaining on him (rightly so, in my opinion) in the last few weeks.

Finally, the race for NL firstbaseman will be a closer race than previously thought. Both Albert Pujols and Derrek Lee are legit candidates but anyone who looks at the stats has to admit Lee is having a superior year. Lee is fighting lack of name recognition and a strong fan base in St Louis. The good news for Lee is that he is doing everything he can to rectify that first problem and more and more people are learning who Derrek Lee is and what he can do.

Don’t forget to vote!

After seeing Wild Bill Holden last week, I decided to order This Old Cub, the video that inspired him to do his walk. Well, it came today.

Now, I’ve read various reviews on the web about the video. Some of them boiled down to “Well, if you’re a Cub fan, you’ll probably like it” so I was prepared to see a mediocre video at best.

I was happily surprised.

The film shows basically two sides of Santo’s life. His career with the Cubs complete with footage, summary of his career and yes, a snapshot of the 1969 season which is still not easy to watch, I must say.

The film also covers Santo’s current life as a broadcaster for the Cubs and how he deals with the fate that lifelong diabetes has handed him. Both of these aspects were interspersed together pretty well without losing continuity.

There were interviews with many people in Santo’s life including former teammates and current colleagues.

Well worth the 24.99 plus s+h. It helps that I’m a Cub fan but I think that any fan of baseball history would enjoy it. Even my wife, who enjoys baseball but by no means is a fanatic, watched the whole thing and gave it a thumbs up.

If you’re interested, you can buy it here.

Followup: Forgot to mention that 5 bucks of your purchase goes to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
