The University of Illinois baseball team traveled to Bloomington, Indiana for a 4 game set against the University of Indiana Hoosiers. After losing their last two games, Illinois needed a win badly Friday night and that’s what they got as the good guys won 8-3.

Chris Robinson helped out with 2 dingers as well as back-to-back homers by Dusty Bensko and Drew Davidson. Pitcher Brian Blomquist allowed 2 runs in 7 1/3 innings and got the win.

More importantly, the glovemen held it together and there were no costly errors.

The win keeps the team in first place in the Big Ten with a 10-3 conference record.

There is a doubleheader on Saturday and a game on Sunday to close out the 4 game set.

Ooh! This one had to hurt. Illinois had Illinois State down to its last strike with a one-run lead but once again, fielding mishaps proved to be costly.

A base hit, a throwing error by the catcher, and a wild pitch pretty much handed the Cardinals the tying run. Another hit and a throwing error put the winning run on second primed for the inevitable game winning hit.

The Illini head to Indiana this weekend for a four-game series.

I took my son to the Illinois-Michigan game on Sunday. What a beautiful day it was for a baseball game!

Dusty Bensko’s three-run homer in the first gave Illinois the lead but Michigan scored 4 in the second due to a few misplays in the field.

An rbi single by Chad “Pat, I’d like to buy a vowel” Frk tied the game 5-5 in the fifth but Michigan put themselves up for good in the sixth on a sac fly.

An ironic note: Michigan had big names like Mike Schmidt and Jeff Kunkel playing on their team. Anybody remember MLB hot prospect Jeff Kunkel from the 80s?

Illinois is now 20-10-1 and 9-3 in the Big Ten. They are currently tied for first in the Big Ten with Minnesota.
