Tough day to choose a LSOTD.  Fifteen players had 3 or more hits.  And Ortiz had an interesting outing against the Braves.

Vlad is doing his best to reward his fantasy owners with yummy stats after being out with the injury (yeah, I’m sure fantasy owners are foremost on his mind :-P).

Note: You probably won’t see any posts from me for a week or so.  I’m going on a well-deserved vacation.  The site will be left in the capable hands of the Baseball Zealot staff who will be posting in my absence.  I’ve told my wife that we need to schedule stops at wireless cafes so I may peek in and see how things are going.

until then,

Only four games on the docket so I decided to go with one of the pitchers who I’m keeping close tabs on.  How long will it be before ML hitters figure him out?

How good has he been?

He allowed one earned run in 8+ innings and his season ERA went up.

Manny Ramirez, Boston Red Sox 1 for 1, 1 RBI Sometimes it’s not what you do, but it’s when you do what you do. Putting aside all rumors involving a trade out of Beantown Ramirez came up as a pinch hitter in the bottom of the 8th to deliver an RBI single to break a three-three tie. With two outs Edgar Renteria doubled, the Twins elected to intentionally walk David Ortiz, and the Boston faithful started chanting, “MANNY, MANNY, MANNY”. “Forget about the trade. This is the place I want to be,” Ramirez said. “They want to win. I want to win, too. I’m back.” Ramirez bounced a chopper up the middle to score Edgar Renteria and give the Red Sox their fifth consecutive victory. After Renteria crossed the plate, Ramirez took off his batting helmet and pointed both hands at the crowd in a double-barreled salute. “That’s hard not to get chills when that stuff is happening,” Red Sox manager Terry Francona said. “That’s about as electric as you’ll see it.”

Gomes hit the trifecta Saturday and Tampa Bay even won.  Gomes’ homers were all solo shots which might be indicative of his season.  I have researched this but given that he has 12 homers and only 24 rbis, it wouldn’t surprise me.

Followup:  Ok, I decided to research it a little.  Of the 6 AL players currently with 12 homeruns, Gomes has the least rbis with 24.  Anderson has the most bang for his buck with 68.  The average is 44.

Gomes can forgiven a little since he only has 151 ab.

7/29 Linescore of the Day – Adam Dunn

Adam Dunn, Cincinnati Reds 3 for 5, 2B, 2 HR, 2 runs, 4 rbis Ten total bases in this game for Dunn.  He accounted for half of the Reds’ offense.  Dunn’s previous high in homeruns is last years’ 46.  At this pace, he is bound to pass that total.
