Theriot gets Hot on MLB Radio

Maybe in an attempt to show that MLB Radio doesn’t ALWAYS focus on East coast teams, Stayin’ Hot with Seth and Bone interviewed Cub rookie Ryan Theriot yesterday. You can hear the interview here. Baton Rouge native Theriot struck a chord with co-host Darryl Hamilton who is also from Louisiana. While I’m on the topic, … Continue reading “Theriot gets Hot on MLB Radio”

While I’m on the topic, I gotta say Darryl “Hambone” Hamilton lends some fresh air to the MLB Radio staff. He’s laid back and adds a bit of hipness that they sorely need. I’m leery of most ex-jocks who make the transition to the broadcasting/analyst role (Joe Morgan has done ok) but Bone is smart, funny and topical.

Running the bases for autism

Tomorrow, Trenton Thunder (AA Yankees) assistant GM Greg Coleman will run the bases 500 times in an effort to raise money for autism research, education and advocacy.

Coleman’s son, Kevin was recently diagnosed with Pervasive Development Disorder (PDD), a form of autism.

Asssuming he’s not too tired, I think they’re going to have him back on again later this week to let them know how it went.

Update: Coleman completed his 500 laps today. He began at 7:;07am and ended at 2:32pm running over 34 miles. No word on how much has been collected so far. My guess is that the donations are still rolling in.

Bouton promoting new vintage baseball league

Jim Bouton, former pitcher and author of Ball Four, has a new project. He’s promoting a new vintage baseball league.

The league will be called the Vintage Base Ball Federation. Here is the VBBF web site. The league will base their rules and customs from the 1880’s time period.

Bouton appeared on MLB Radio’s Stayin’ Hot with Seth and Bone to promote his new project. Take a listen to his interview here (his interview is about halfway through the broadcast).

Of course, as a fan of the Vermilion Voles, I’m no stranger to vintage baseball. For the record, the Voles are part of the Vintage Base Ball Association which has been around for quite a few years.

The new VBBF is just starting out but has lofty goals. In his interview, Bouton envisions a World Series of sorts by 2007. Though it is very young, the league has the advantage of a recognized spokesperson and (presumably) some financial resources behind it.

Bouton was describing the method of play during his interview and mentioned that they use gloves similar to garden gloves. He did say there are “purists” out there right now playing by the rules of 1850’s who use no gloves at all.

I smiled and thought of the Vermilion Voles.

Podcast Review: The Steve Stone Show

I have another baseball podcast I’ve added to my list. My buddy Tyler turned me on to this one. It’s The Steve Stone Show.

His radio show broadcasts out of WSCR 670AM “The Score” from Chicago. He covers both Cubs and White Sox baseball topics. It wouldn’t be Stoney if he didn’t tell it like it is. Being in his position, he does have some inside information.

Stone takes phone calls during the radio show as well as banters with the regular radio hosts of WSCR. I find most of what Stone talks about interesting and insightful.

Two minor annoyances:
– unlike most podcasts, you need to register your name and info before downloading any podcasts.

– also, no rss feed. So that means you have to go to WSCR’s web site everytime you want to download a show rendering any podcast aggregator useless for this show. Ugh.

That said, it still worth it for Chicago baseball analysis and news. Check it out.

Do you think the Brock/Broglio trade was brought up?

You betcha.

Podcast Review: Baseball Today at MLB Radio

Sometimes when I goof up, something good comes of it. I was on my way out and wanted a good baseball show to listen to on my iPod. Instead of using Juice*, I decided to download a podcast manually. Sometimes when I goof up, something good comes of it.

I was on my way out and wanted a good baseball show to listen to on my iPod. Instead of using Juice*, I decided to download a podcast manually. I decided on MLB’s Fantasy 411. I clicked, dragged, and was on my way.

When I eventually listened to the podcast, I realized that it wasn’t Fantasy 411 I downloaded but its companion show, Baseball Today. And boy, I’m glad I did.

I must admit the topics of today’s episode were rather interesting to me. First, they had interviewed Cubs’ bench manager Dick Pole who had some insight on the Prior matter. Oh and host Vinny Micucci did ask Pole about the possibility of moving Kerry Wood to the pen… Pole skillfully dodged that one saying that the Cubs need to get Wood healthy and when he is he’ll be back in the rotation.

The next interview was with Dodger rookie catcher Russ Martin. Martin is one of the Dodgers’ several hot rookies this year. The Canadian import gave a very honest, sincere interview.

For those interested in Baseball Today, this is the rss feed.

Squeeze the Juice

*Oh, Juice. What is Juice? Juice is a podcast aggregator (formerly known as iPodder). Once you initially enter in the rss feed for the podcasts you are interested in, you no longer need manually go to the web page to download the podcast.

I find it to be a very handy utility. In the morning before I leave for work, I click one button and it downloads all the podcasts I like to listen to and then all I need to do is drag them to my iPod. It’s a lot easier than doing it manually.

Juice is free and available for download here.

Podcast Review: MLB.com Fantasy 411

When I first began listening to MLB.com Fantasy 411, I was a bit skeptical.  Coming from MLB, I suspected something over-polished, toeing the company line.  You see, that’s what I like about listening to baseball podcasts.  I get the sense that, for the most part, the hosts are baseball fans foremost.  Unlike many of the … Continue reading “Podcast Review: MLB.com Fantasy 411”

Unlike many of the TV or radio sports personalities who seem to be either entertainers or former athletes.  As a result, ‘casters tend to put out a more intelligent show with better, more in-depth analysis.

Well, my skepticism is not warranted.  It’s almost as if MLB went out, found two guys who are really into fantasy baseball and hired them to do a show.  Who knows?  Maybe that’s what they did.

Hosts Cory Scharwtz and Mike Siano are involved in fantasy baseball leagues and readily talk about their experiences.  More importantly, they take calls an emails (mostly asking about trade advice). They always do a quick summary of the majors and end their show with “Pitch or Ditch”, a rundown of the pitching probables of the next day.

As the name implies, their focus is fantasy baseball so if that is not your thing, the show may not appeal to you.  If it is though, you’ll get some useful info.

Here is their rss feed.

Michael Barrett, Chicago Cubs

2 for 4, HR, 4 rbis, 2 runs

Maybe I’m showing my bias here but I gotta go with Barrett.  Ironically, the folks at Cubscast.com (a very good podcast if you’re a Cub fan, by the way) were getting on Barrett’s case in their podcast recorded after the Cincy series for his passed ball and error he committed during against the Reds.

I think he’s made up for that.
