Marvin Miller and Curt Flood

For their last show of the year, Baseball Prospectus Radio had a “Best of 2006” episode airing some of their best clips from the past year. One clip was Marvin Miller, former players’ representative. For as much influence he’s had on the game (negative or positive, it’s your call), it’s hard to believe that he … Continue reading “Marvin Miller and Curt Flood”

For their last show of the year, Baseball Prospectus Radio had a “Best of 2006” episode airing some of their best clips from the past year. One clip was Marvin Miller, former players’ representative. For as much influence he’s had on the game (negative or positive, it’s your call), it’s hard to believe that he retired in 1984. The clip was interesting enough for me to go back to BPR’s
archive
and check out the whole interview.

Much of the interview was devoted to the Curt Flood and reserve clause. That reminded me that my wife gave me as a Christmas gift, the book A Well-Paid Slave: Curt Flood’s Fight for Free Agency in Professional Sports.. I look forward to reading it. It’s second in my book queue at the moment (right now, I’m reading Bill James’ Whatever Happened to the Hall of Fame? I always enjoy reading Bill James.
I don’t always agree with him but his books are a good read).

Curt Flood never won his case and aside from a short stint with the Senators, never made it big in the majors after his case despite his immense talents.

Big Ten Hardball

College baseball fansites are far and few between and ones dedicated to the Big Ten are even rarer. So that’s why I was happy to run across Big Ten Hardball. To be honest, I found out about it because they linked to Baseball Zealot Radio’s interview of Illini shortstop Shawn Roof. If you haven’t heard it yet, take a listen.

By the way, Brian the blogger for BTH, also puts out Beyond Boxscores, a sports blog with a Detroit bent.

Baseball Zealot Radio chats with Shawn Roof, Illini shortstop

In the dugout, Illini shortstop Shawn Roof can never stop talking. Fortunately for us, the same was true when Baseball Zealot Radio interviewed him for our latest show. Shawn had plenty to say. Shawn Roof

In the dugout, Illini shortstop Shawn Roof can never stop talking. Fortunately for us, the same was true when Baseball Zealot Radio interviewed him for our latest show. Shawn had plenty to say.

Shawn talked about the Illini’s chances for 2007 and what it was like growing up around ballplayers as the son of professional baseball coach Gene Roof. He talked about his hopes and aspirations for Illini and beyond.

By the way, the family involvement doesn’t stop with him and his father, either. Well, there’s his uncle Phil Roof. But you would have guessed that. He has two brothers as well though. One plays for Michigan State and the other just signed a letter of intent with Michigan State as well. I’m definitely not missing THAT series.

Check out the show. It’s a good one. Todd and I yak a bit about Matsuzaka and the Pirates for the first half then we get down to business with the interview of Shawn.

I know I learned something.

The Baseball History Podcast is just the thing for baseball history buffs. Taking a look at the subject matter, he seems to cover the gamut from pre-1900 to the 1980’s.

And he has such a soothing voice, too.

Take a listen.

Take a listen to our latest edition of Baseball Zealot Radio. We take a look at the goings on at the Winter Meetings. Tedd gives a good review of the Rule 5 draft. During the show, Shawn brought up some interesting trivia. As a matter of fact, I pose it in the form of a question. You can listen to the show to find the answer (or probably use Google).

What strange significance does ’90s Atlanta pitcher Ben Rivera have in regards to the Rule 5 draft?

We also hit on the Ford Frick award nominees.

While I’m on the topic of BZR, I want to say thanks to Brandon Rosage of Outsider Radio who plugged Baseball Zealot Radio on his show. Check out Brandon’s show if you get the chance. It’s on my podcast roll for a reason.

If you haven’t checked out our show, give it a whirl. You don’t need an iPod to hear our stuff. Just a computer with sound.

Lyons interview on Baseball Prospectus

Baseball Prospectus has an exclusive interview with Steve Lyons in their latest show. It’s evident Psycho regrets not being in the booth since shooting off his mouth but says most people he’s talked to haven’t been too judgmental and have been supportive. The Lyons interview is the first segment of the Baseball Prospectus show.

Patrick Arnold profiled in SI

This week’s Sports Illustrated is profiling Patrick Arnold who has just been subpoenaed in the BALCO case. Arnold is co-owner of Proviant Technologies here in Champaign, Illinois.

You can hear an interview with SI article author George Dohrmann on Baseball Prospectus. Dohrmann actually got a chance to tour the Proviant facility. It was not as Dohrmann thought, a “meth lab in a cornfield” but a high tech, professional operation. A “meth lab in a cornfield”?? Is that what you city guys think of us?? Please, don’t answer that.

What is at question is whether Arnold knows if professional athletes have knowingly taken his performance enhancing supplements.

Anyway, judging by the interview (I haven’t seen the article yet), Dohrmann does his best to get in Arnold’s head. He did a extensive interview and I’m looking forward to reading it. If anyone here subscribes to SI, I’d like to hear any feedback.
