While watching Braves-Phillies game the other day, my son told me he didn’t know why they called it a “bullpen”. I had to admit I didn’t have a satisfactory explanation.

So I e-mailed my circle of baseball friends asking this question. I got a few responses back and a few links pointing to some possible answers. The most authorative source came from Wikipedia which gave a few possible origins for the name:

1. The bullpen symbolically represents the fenced in area of a bull’s pen, where bulls wait before being sent off to the slaughter. The relief pitchers are the bulls and the bullpen represents their pen.
2. Late arrivers to ball games in the late 19th century were cordoned off into standing room only areas in foul territory. Because the fans were herded like cattle, this area became known as the bullpen, a designation which was later transferred over to the relief pitchers who warmed up there.
3. At the turn of the century, outfield fences were often adorned with advertisements for Bull Durham Tobacco. Since relievers warmed up in a nearby pen, the term bullpen was created.
4. In the 1800s, jails and holding cells were nicknamed bullpens, in respect of many police officers’ bullish features — strength and a short temper. The term was later applied to bullpens in baseball.
5. Casey Stengel suggested the term might have been derived from managers getting tired of their relief pitchers “shooting the bull” in the dugout and were therefore sent elsewhere, where they wouldn’t be a bother to the rest of the team — the bullpen. How serious he was when he made this claim is not clear.

My guess is that #5 was meant tongue-in-cheek considering the source.

Keep Your Eye Out for Teddy Ballgame

I’d like to introduce someone who will be posting from time to time on The Baseball Zealot. He goes by Teddy Ballgame. He’s a White Sox fan but I try not to hold that against him ;-) But more importantly, he’s opinionated and knows his baseball better than almost anyone I know. His postings will … Continue reading “Keep Your Eye Out for Teddy Ballgame”

His postings will be longer and more opinion-oriented than mine. If you don’t agree with what he says (I know I don’t half the time), take the time to tell him so by leaving a comment.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy his postings.

Bad Brad, who hit for his second career cycle earlier this season, was one triple shy of hitting his 3rd on Sunday during the Nats’ 11-4 victory over the Mets.

Red Sox-Rays Get It On

There were heated exchanges, bench-clearing brawls, and six ejections at today’s game between the Boston Red Sox and the… Tampa Bay Devil Rays??? Hmm.. Aubrey Huff didn’t think there would be any team rivalry brewing. “That’s Yankees-Red Sox,” Huff said. “We’re the last team on their minds.” The Sox won the game 11-3.

In doing so, he tied Randy Johnson for the franchise record for victories with 130 and is tied for second with Mark Langston for strikeouts with 1,078. Randy Johnson is first with 2,162.

So far, 42-year old Moyer has made quite a comeback after a sub-par year last year. He has a 2.53 ERA and has allowed only 7 walks in 32 IP.

Some wondered if he was at the end of his line when in 2004 he went 7-13 with a 5.21 ERA.

RISP Confidence article worth a look

David Pinto has an posting over at Baseball Musings expounding on a Bill James’ article he read. Now I’ve read my share of Bill James. I do think anyone that anyone who can take Bill James, expound on it, and can sound reasonably intelligent, must have something on the ball.

Anyone who can do all that and have a cool statistical chart to go along with it must be a genius :)

Check out David’s posting.

i.gif On Saturday, the University of Illinois baseball team split with Indiana in a wild and wooly afternoon.

Start with the fact that it was snowy.

In the first game, down by three and in the top of the seventh, Illini Mike Rohde hit a two-out grand slam which proved to be the game winner.

In the second game, Illinois had leads of 7-2 and 8-6 but by the bottom of the seventh it was 13-10, Illinois. Here’s what happened in the seventh according to the article on fightingillini.com:

Indiana had a runner on first with two outs when IU clean-up hitter Ryan Parker hit a high pop fly to second base that looked like it would end the game, however, Illinois second baseman Shawn Roof, who had just entered the game as a defensive replacement for Kyes, dropped the sure out and giving the Hoosiers new life.

At this point, things got really weird. With two on, the next hitter Zach Boswell hit a bullet down the first baseline that went all the way to the corner and disappeared under the bullpen chairs. Rightfielder Trevor Huisinga ran over, couldn’t find the ball and threw his hands in the air for a moment, signaling a lodged ball. Meanwhile Boswell continued to circle the bases, scoring behind Jay Brant and Parker on an apparent inside-the-park three-run home run. As Indiana cheered, the Illini protested and the umpires gathered to decide if the HR would be allowed or if it would be called a ground-rule double. After about five minutes of deliberation, it was declared a home run and the game was tied at 13-13 and heading to extra innings.

Indiana would later win the game in the bottom of the ninth on a one out single by Parker to salvage the split.

Gotta love college baseball.

Update: Illinois won the last game on Sunday 7-5 to take the series. Jake Stewart, in his first career start, got the win.

i.gif The University of Illinois baseball team traveled to Bloomington, Indiana for a 4 game set against the University of Indiana Hoosiers. After losing their last two games, Illinois needed a win badly Friday night and that’s what they got as the good guys won 8-3.

Chris Robinson helped out with 2 dingers as well as back-to-back homers by Dusty Bensko and Drew Davidson. Pitcher Brian Blomquist allowed 2 runs in 7 1/3 innings and got the win.

More importantly, the glovemen held it together and there were no costly errors.

The win keeps the team in first place in the Big Ten with a 10-3 conference record.

There is a doubleheader on Saturday and a game on Sunday to close out the 4 game set.

Good luck, team!
