ESPN’s Caught on to Minnesota’s Control Domination

Four days ago, I noted in TBZ that Twins pitchers have allowed only 41 walks in 28 games. Today there is an article in ESPN about the Twins’ pitchers’ pinpoint control. Check it out.

Cubs Win!!

Yes, the Cubs won today. Carlos Zambrano pitched a complete game to defeat the Phillies 2-1. Funny thing about complete games, they don’t involve the bullpen, do they? All thoughout this winless streak of the Cubs, I had this thought in the back of my head.

What if Dusty Baker, pitch counts be damned, decided to leave a starter who’s pitching well in the whole game and just see what would happen?

Maybe they might win.

As it was, Carlos had a pretty low pitch count for the whole game but maybe Dusty can take a lesson from this.

Go Cubs!

A Good Day for a Ball Game

Today I took the kids to the first game of the doubleheader between the Northwestern Wildcats and the University of Illinois Fighting Illini. Last night’s game between the two was a laugher as Illinois won 21-4. Brian Blomquist pitched a complete game and Dusty Bensko hit a grand slam in their rout of the Wildcats.

Today looked like more of a battle as we settled in during the 4th inning and it was 2-0 in favor of the good guys. As soon as we sat down, the Wildcat 1B Mark Ori slammed one over the left field fence to make it 2-1. The guy next to us told me that we must be bad luck.

I think he was just kidding.

The Illini had nothing to worry about though. They scored a total of 9 runs and Northwestern could only muster one more. Illinois pitcher Jimmy Conroy pitched a complete game win.

The cool thing about attending these games is how close we are to the action.

Starter Jimmy Conroy allowed only 2 runs in 7 innings.

Catcher Chris Robinson laced a pitch into right-center for a triple. The third base coach here is Head Coach Itch Jones.

High Fives all around after the win.

Update: Illinois won the second game 12-9 behind the hitting of J.R. Kyes who went 3 for 4 with a homer and 4 rbis.

Update: The Illini finished strong against the Wildcats winning 17-3. Illinois banged out 7 homers including 3 by Drew Davidson.

The four-game sweep cements Illinois in first place in the Big Ten.

Pat Digs Baseball

My two kids like to watch Wheel of Fortune. It’s become a routine to turn on the TV at 6:30 and watch it every night. As game shows go, it’s not too bad and helps the kiddos with their ABC’s. You’re probably wondering where I’m going with this. Well, it turns out host Pat Sajak … Continue reading “Pat Digs Baseball”

You’re probably wondering where I’m going with this.

Well, it turns out host Pat Sajak is a big baseball fan (I noted earlier that he is financing a minor league in California). Last week they were broadcasting the show from Kansas City, Missouri. On Friday night at the end of the show, they spent a good two minutes talking about the Negro League Baseball Museum located there in Kansas City. They included some footage of Pat walking through the museum that week pointing out some of the highlights.

Very cool.

Sox, Garland Continue Winning Streaks

Jon Garland ended his scoreless inning streak but I’m sure it’s ok with him. The White Sox still won 10-7 over the Jays and he managed to still get the win. The Sox have now won seven straight. The win makes Garland 6-0 tied with Dontrelle Willis for the MLB lead. Garland can thank Paul … Continue reading “Sox, Garland Continue Winning Streaks”

Garland can thank Paul Konerko who broke a streak of his own. Paulie was 0 for his last 26 at-bats entering this game. He hit 2 homers and drove in five runs.
