Way to go, Shawn!
Ok, maybe that’s not fair. But let’s face it, LaTroy was not working for the Cubs and probably never would. I for one, think Jerome Williams has some talent. Ok, maybe that’s not fair. But let’s face it, LaTroy was not working for the Cubs and probably never would.
I for one, think Jerome Williams has some talent. He is getting off to a slow start (spending most of it in the minors) having to tend to his ill father earlier in the year. Still, he’s 23 and very promising.
I know very little about David Aardsma other than what we are reading in the press now. He was a high draft pick in 2003. The Cubs say they’ll take a wait-and-see approach as to whether he’ll start or pitch out of the pen.
At this point, this looks like a very solid deal for the Cubs especially considering their injury situation. Williams could be the real deal. Aardsma could be the icing on the cake.
But unless Aardsma proves to be strong out of pen, they still haven’t taken care of business.
Followup: Here’s an article headlined “Teammates Will Miss Hawkins”. Yes, and so will Cubs’ opponents.
Ok, I’ll stop being so smart. Seriously, Cubs management did LaTroy a favor by trading him. He can get a fresh start in San Fran. He had too much baggage and there was too much discontent among the fans to be effective in Chicago.
Aardsma Trivia: Just read over at Cub Town (along with their analysis of the Cub trade) that Aardsma displaces Hank Aaron at the top of alphabetical list of career players.

If you were a Minnesota Gopher fan, you have to be pretty happy right today. In the bottom of the 9th, eighth place hitter and secondbaseman Joe Maciej hit a walk-off two-run homerun to beat Ohio State 4-3. That sets the stage for the tournament championship game tomorrow. Ok, USA Today’s teaser headline was “Prior injured, Cubs win”. Geez, that’s a tough price to pay for a “W”. They’ve X-rayed his elbow and the results are negative. Which I guess means he doesn’t have an elbow. Seriously, he’s lucky not to have a fracture. Especially, since Brad Hawpe’s batted ball ricocheted hard enough … Continue reading “Prior hurt”

Seriously, he’s lucky not to have a fracture. Especially, since Brad Hawpe’s batted ball ricocheted hard enough for Aramis Ramirez for him to catch it for the out.
Nice play, btw, Aramis.
As usual, we won’t know the extent till later. And knowing Cubs management, probably not then either.
If Cubs fans are looking for some good news, they can take heart that the Cubs have won 4 of their last 6 games.
With Wood and now possibly Prior gone, we’ll see what happens now.
Update: Though X-rays were negative, an MRI showed a slight fracture in Prior’s elbow.

One can hardly fault starting pitcher Jimmy Conroy who pitched a heck of a game. He pitched a 10 inning complete game allowing only 3 earned runs.
Shawn Roof hurrying to his post at the hot corner.
Shawn Roof did his best, too. He went 3-4 with an rbi. For the tournament, Roof was 6 for 7.
A word about Shawn Roof. His bio informs us that he was named “Mr Hustle” by his high school in Paducah, KY. If you watch him during the game, you can see why. When the inning is over, he runs out to his position at third base. Then when his team is up, he runs back to the dugout. He does nothing at half-pace.
Chris Robinson heading to third on a run-scoring triple. Coach Itch Jones is in the foreground.
I enjoyed watching Robbie play thoughout the spring. It seemed he could do everything. He’s a good hitter (.353 with 8 HR), has great instincts behind the plate and a great arm.
And they don’t give out Big Ten Sportman awards for being a jerk.
So that’s it for the Illini in the tournament. With them and Iowa eliminated that leaves #3 Purdue as the only team left seeded in the top half of the bracket.
Jake Peavy, San Diego Padres 9 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 0 HR A strong two hitter for Jake PV, his first career shutout. Coming in second was teammate Dave Roberts who hit like Brian. Dave was 4 for 5 with 4 rbis and 2 doubles.

Since my article about the multitudes of good players on the disabled list only a couple days ago, it looks like others are going to join them. Don’t look at his BB/K ratio to justify him either. It’s 20/13.
