“Perfect” Katie Brownell to be Honored at Hall

Last month, I wrote about Katie Brownell, the Little League girl who threw a perfect game and struck out every batter she faced.  It turns out she hasn’t escaped the attention of the Baseball Hall of Fame.

The Hall plans to commemorate the event on July 7 and the jersey she wore during her perfect game will be on display.  The jersey will eventually be part of either the Women in Baseball exhibit or Youth Baseball exhibit.

Granny Manny

Of the 409 homeruns Manny Ramirez has hit in his career, 19 of them have been hit with the bases loaded.  According to Baseball Musings, this puts him close enough to be a threat to Lou Gehrig’s record of 23 career grand slams. If he can stay healthy, something that the Iron Horse wasn’t afforded, this … Continue reading “Granny Manny”

If he can stay healthy, something that the Iron Horse wasn’t afforded, this is definitely a possibility.

Prior was ready to come back, that was pretty evident.

Prior retired 18 of the 19 batters he faced.  Not wanting to push their luck, the Cubs coaching staff decided to pull him after six innings which in this case might have been the prudent thing to do.  New addition Jerome Williams, pitched two scoreless innings after giving up a walk.  I like Williams.  Once he decides that he’ll get his stuff together, he’ll be a good addition to the Cubs staff.

Prior seemed tickled pink by Burnitz’ baserunning.  Burnitz got on first via a Konerko error, stole second, took third on a wild pitch and scored on a sac fly.  What year is this? 1908?  Quoth Prior:

”I think what made it even a better ballgame was the way Burnitz ran the bases in that inning,” Prior said. “That insurance run was key.”

My Cub fan buddy TDChitown was at the Cell for the game.  I talked to him this morning and I could practically hear him beaming.  Prior was back healthy and strong, the Cubs took two of three from the Sox, things were looking up in Wrigleyville.  He said the Cell was a great place to see a Sox/Cubs game save for the drunk Sox fans who wouldn’t stop whining about how “bad” the Cubs were.  Seems kinda ironic since Prior was pitching a one-hitter against them.

The Cubs are more than ready to have Prior back.  Not only that, Kerry Wood is scheduled to be back on Wednesday.  Whether or not this translates to a possible run on the first place Cardinals remains to be seen.

The Hardball Times- A Stat Lover’s Site

I’ve been all over the web and thought I’d seen most of the cool baseball sites out there.  Not so with The Hardball Times.  I just got a chance to peruse it for the first time this afternoon.  It’s a very interesting site and I’d recommend it to anyone who is interested in stat analysis of … Continue reading “The Hardball Times- A Stat Lover’s Site”

I’ve been all over the web and thought I’d seen most of the cool baseball sites out there.  Not so with The Hardball Times.  I just got a chance to peruse it for the first time this afternoon.  It’s a very interesting site and I’d recommend it to anyone who is interested in stat analysis of current MLB teams and players.

Word o’ warning, if you are a fan of traditional baseball stats, if you live and die by the batting average and if you tremble at the mention of terms like “Runs Created” or “Win Shares”, prepare to either be transformed or to be turned off.  This site isn’t for the faint of heart when it comes to stat analysis.  They have put together a pretty extensive database complete with the latest statistical formulas.

THT comes complete with articles written by ten regular contributing authors and is updated pretty much daily.

Check it out.  It’s worth a look-see.

At first glance, Scotty Po didn’t look too special in the box score.  But he’s a leadoff hitter.  And for a leadoff man, he fulfilled his duties.  He got on four out of four times. He stole a couple bases.  And most importantly, he scored twice.  And that’s the name of the game.

Just noticed, he also got picked off.

Toby Harrah- Not a Chance!

On this date in 1976, Toby Harrah became the only shortstop in ML history to play a doubleheader without recording a fielding chance.  He was playing for the Rangers and the doubleheader was against the White Sox.  Oddly enough, Harrah had plenty contact with the ball with the bat that day.  He collected six hits … Continue reading “Toby Harrah- Not a Chance!”

Oddly enough, Harrah had plenty contact with the ball with the bat that day.  He collected six hits including two homeruns, one a grand slam.  The Rangers lost the first game and won the second.

Harrah was one of those players who was never a superstar but nevertheless was solid all around.  He hit for some power, stole bases, and saw the ball well enough to get on base with the walk.  His fielding was well above average first as a shortstop then later as a thirdbaseman.

Cubs looking to tie it up

Lee is 2-4 and therefore his BA is going to go up even if he gets another at-bat.

The Sox gotta love playing the Cubs at the Cell.  If nothing else, at least they get some fans in the stands.  I mean Cub fans, of course.

Update:  The Cubs pull it off.  Final score:  6-2
