7/18: LINESCORE OF THE DAY – ANDRUW JONES

Andruw Jones wasn’t good enough to play in the All Star game, in a game that counts, but he was certainly good enough to earn Linescore of the Day for his work in last night’s game against the Cardinals. Andruw launched two homers, ripped a double, drove in six, and scored twice, all this plus … Continue reading “7/18: LINESCORE OF THE DAY – ANDRUW JONES”

Andruw launched two homers, ripped a double, drove in six, and scored twice, all this plus he’s the greatest defensive centerfielder in the history of the game. Jones is the best player in the game today, period. And for him not to even get into the All Star game was an injustice.

Andruw Jones 5 for 5, 1 2B, 2 HRs, 6 RBIs, 2 runs

BRIAN ANDERSON: ABOVE THE MENDOZA LINE

In last night’s 7-1 White Sox win over Detroit, Chicago rookie centerfielder Brian Anderson brought his batting average over the Mendoza Line. Mario Mendoza was a light hitting shortstop who struggled to hit .200, although his lifetime batting average is .215. The Sox starting centerfield job was handed to Anderson when Aaron Rowand was traded … Continue reading “BRIAN ANDERSON: ABOVE THE MENDOZA LINE”

In last night’s 7-1 White Sox win over Detroit, Chicago rookie centerfielder Brian Anderson brought his batting average over the Mendoza Line. Mario Mendoza was a light hitting shortstop who struggled to hit .200, although his lifetime batting average is .215. The Sox starting centerfield job was handed to Anderson when Aaron Rowand was traded in the offseason to Philadelphia in exchange for DH Jim Thome. I have been outspoken in my desire to have Chicago see if they can trade for a centerfielder. It has been frustrating watching Anderson struggle at the major league level, especially in a hotly contested playoff race. Last night’s win put the Pale Hose on the Tigers tail, just 3 1/2 games out of first in the AL Central. Now that Brian is FINALLY over the .200 mark (.201), maybe he can take it from there.

LET’S GO BRIAN ANDERSON!!! LET’S GO WHITE SOX!!!

PITCHING MATCHUP OF ALLTIME

In this day of over hype, sometimes REAL stories slip through the cracks. Unbelievably I find myself 200 miles north of Chicago, when my home is only two miles from Wrigley Field. Tonite Roger Clemens (342-175) of the Hoston Astros will take on Greg Maddux (325-199) and the Chicago Cubs. Maddux earned his 306th career win over Clemens, who had 329 victories at the time, with a 3-2 win on April 29, 2005. It was the first time since Tim Keefe and Jim Gavin pitched against each other on July 21, 1892 that two 300-game winners met in the National League. This may be the last time two three hundred game winners ever square off against one another. It is becoming harder and harder to get to 300 wins, with five man rotations, pitch counts, & deep bullpens.

Even though I’ve always been a Chicago White Sox fan, I’ve always been a Greg Maddux fan. I take alot of crap when I wear my Maddux tee shirt (in Cubbie blue). Greg was born on my birthday, ten years later, and has been a member of my APBA team the Chicago Champions since his first card. Maddux just picked up his 300th win in Pittsburgh versus the Three River Gamblers, while Roger Clemens trails him in alltime Illowa APBA League wins by two at 298. So even though I’m in Waupaca, my butt will be in front of my new TV, tuned in to WGN-TV.

LET’S GO MADDUX!!!

BOOM BOOM BECKETT

Boston Ace(?) Josh Beckett got bombed again, this time by the A’s in a 15-3 loss. Beckett has a winning record of 11-5, despite leading the league with 27 homers allowed, and a 5.12 ERA. There is a serious concern he may develop whiplash from watching balls sail over his head as they leave the … Continue reading “BOOM BOOM BECKETT”

There is a serious concern he may develop whiplash from watching balls sail over his head as they leave the ballyard, or post tramatic stress syndrom from so many bombs going off.

Maybe David Ortiz would have won the HR hitting contest in Pittsburgh had he used teammate Josh Beckett as his pitcher, especially if David told Josh to try to get him out.

With MLB taking a few days off it gave me time to think, it didn’t hurt that the other three major sports also have the days off the day before and the day after the All Star game. These are the only two days all year, which feature no scheduled games among the four major sports (MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL). I started thinking about my youth, you might do the same when you turn 50, anyway my thoughts went back to a friend of mine when I was a kid – wiffle ball. When I was a kid we would play this game for hours behind my house in Chicago in the alley. You had to be a straight away hitter, because if you hit it into a yard you were out. A grounder that bounced by the pitcher was a single, there were marks in the alley signifying doubles, triples, and homers. A really big game would be three on three. We would bat just like our major league heroes, lefty/righty, and imitate their stances. A yellow plastic bat with black tape would be used to try to hit the dancing, curving, dipping sphere as it was hurled plateward. We didn’t call balls & strikes, hence the nickname The Statue of Liberty one player earned as he held his bat high in the air, just like Carl Yastrzemski, waiting for his pitch.

Click here if you wanna learn the history of the game and here if you wanna know about upcoming wiffle ball tournaments. Wiffle ball will live on forever in my memory, but I’m glad to report it is doing better than ever today.

The USA Futures All Stars defeated the World Futures All Stars 8-5, thanks in large part to a five run third inning. Since 1999 Baseball America and Major League Baseball have selected the best young players in baseball to play in the ultimate prospect game. This year’s game MVP Billy Butler (2004 1st round draft choice) was 2 for 3 with a two run homer, nothing but time stands between him and a starting leftfield job with the Royals. The Royals 2005 first round pick Alex Gordon also was 2 for 3 with a double & two runs knocked in. The Royals are coming, as last year’s game MVP was KC’s own Justin Huber. Other Futures who shined were the Rockies Joe Koshansky 1 for 3 with a two run blast and the White Sox Josh Fields 2 for 3 with a double, their paths to the bigs may be a little less clear as they are blocked by Todd Helton & Joe Crede respectively. DonS & I both saw Koshansky & Fields mash in Spring Training in Arizona. San Diego Padre catching prospect George Kottaras had a nice day with the bat for the World team ripping a double & homer in two at bats. You can get all the history of the Futures Games here.

HELFAER FIELD – A DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH

Last year I visited Milwaukee’s Miller Park for the first time and boy did the Brewers ever get it right! Not so much with their new ballpark, but with Helfaer Field which sits where old County Stadium used to be. Last year I visited Milwaukee’s Miller Park for the first time and boy did the Brewers ever get it right! Not so much with their new ballpark, but with Helfaer Field which sits where old County Stadium used to be. County Stadium holds fond memories for me as it’s the place where I saw my first major league baseball game between the Chicago Cubs and my Chicago White Sox. It was the annual Boys Benefit Game held April 7, 1968, the game didn’t count, but try telling that to a couple of kids out to see their heroes duke it out, my cousin Bill bleeding Cubbie blue and me being a rabid White Sox fan. If anybody has a scorecard from that old game, I’d sure appreciate it. And now it seems a fitting tribute that the site where I saw my first game is home to a baseball field where kids can play a little baseball.

The White Sox will be well represented in this year’s
All Star Classic Tuesday night in Pittsburgh. Seven
players from the Southside of Chicago will be making
the trip to the Steel City for the game. The heart of
the Sox lineup will be there to provide power.

There isn’t a team in baseball with more power production
than Jim Thome, Paul Konerko, & Jermaine Dye. Jose
Contreras has won 17 straight regular season
decisions. Mark Buehrle is a proven winner and heads
the staff, despite a couple of rough outings when he
allowed seven first inning runs. BIG BAD Bobby Jenks
has been lights out for the Pale Hose as the closer.
And last, but not least is A.J. Pierzynski who was
internet elected by the fans. A perfect White Sox
promotion of PUNCH AJ landed him the last AL roster
spot. The White Sox are busy producing I PUNCHED AJ
tee shirts, rumor has it they’ll send one to Michael Barrett.
