Starter Paul Byrd didn’t make it out of the first inning as the Royals got to him for nine runs (only three earned) in 2/3 of an inning, it was 10-1 KC after one. But the Tribe came all the way back scoring four in the 9th and two more in the 10th off Joe Nelson & Andrew Sisco for the 15-13 victory. KC had 19 hits, Mike Sweeney & Mark Teahen each had four, but it wasn’t enough. Tom Mastny pitched the bottom of the 10th for the Indians to gain his 2nd save.

Shawn Green was dealt to the NY Mets to fill a big hole in rightfield. Although his best years may be behind him, his power has been down since injuring his shoulder several years ago. The Jewish star outfielder, born in Des Plaines, IL, is a consumate professional, and very solid in RF. Several years ago I got both Shawn Green & Carlos Delgado to autograph a baseball in Dunedin, FL at spring training when both were with the Toronto Blue Jays. The Arizona Diamondbacks appear to be dumping salary, even though they’re in a playoff race, as they only got a marginal minor league pitcher in Evan MacLane. Carlos Quentin should see the lion’s share replacing Green in RF for the D*Backs. The best team in the NL, the Mets, just got better. Still there are at least five AL teams better than the Mets. As CLuke said, maybe the NL should start with small goals, like winning ONE World Series game this year.

8/12-14/06: LINESCORE OF THE DAY – MATT DIAZ

The 28 year old reserve Atlanta Braves outfielder Matt Diaz had a streak of 10 straight hits in 10 straight at bats. I’ve been wanting to say something about this kid’s streak and am finally getting around to it. Oma broke her hip just before this accomplishment, sometimes life gets in the way. EYE OF THE TIGER

I had my tickets to all four games, my airline tickets on SWA, and hotel accomodations at the Hotel Milner (one block from the ballpark). I had my tickets to all four games, my airline tickets on SWA, and hotel accomodations at the Hotel Milner (one block from the ballpark). I even had my trip to see Claliglia at the Toy Chest all mapped out in my mind. But the best made plans are subject to change and change they did, cancelled might be a better description of what happened. Three weeks ago Oma fell, broke her hip, and is recovering from surgery. This past Sunday a man with a black cape & sickle was following her around, so I decided to cancel my Detroit trip to support the Good Guys. I’m happy to report we were able to chase away the grim reaper from Oma. Maybe he’s found a more vulnerable target in my White Sox in Detroit.

In game #1 of this important four game series Jose Contreras & the Southsiders were beaten 7-1, Jermaine Dye’s homer opened the scoring, but that’s all we got. Justin Verlander’s once 100 MPH fastball only reaches the mid 90s now, but that was all he needed. How could I expect Contreras to fare better against the Tigers than he did against the Royals? KC bombed Contreras in his last outing (I game I had to leave early). It was no gamble in the 2nd game as Kenny Rogers dominated Pale Hose hitters 4-0 as Mark Buehrle took the loss. Ozzie Guillen got his money’s worth after being ejected for arguing balls & strikes when Buehrle walked in a run on a low pitch that Rogers got the benefit of a called strike three on Paul Konerko in the top of the inning.

Two down, two to go. Clearly Detroit has the Eye of the Tiger, something the White Sox need to get. It should be noted that Aaron Rowand might be out for the season after running into Phillies secondbaseman Chase Utley, earlier in the season Rowand ran nose first into Philadelphia’s centerfield wall. I still like the Sox acquiring Jim Thome, but there’s no questioning Aaron’s desire to win. I was a little concerned about my safety in Detroit and staying at the Hotel Milner, but I wasn’t worried about my heroes, maybe I should have been.

At this point it looks like the Tigers have answered the White Sox challenge. The Wild Card might be the best way for the defending World Series Chamions to make the playoffs. Currently Chicago holds a nose hair lead over the Twins. Minnesota brings its act to the Cell this weekend, but first we have to show there was at least some reason for making the trip to Detroit. At least the White Sox can’t do as bad as the Red Sox who recently dropped a five game series against the Yankees.

8/22/06: LINESCORE OF THE DAY – NICK MARKAKIS

At the start of the season Markakis struggled for the O’s. It looked like he was overmatched. NickyV even suggested the only reason he was in the lineup was due to his Greek heritage, Orioles owner Peter Angelos is also Greek. But now it seems Baltimore might have known what they were doing. Nick is … Continue reading “8/22/06: LINESCORE OF THE DAY – NICK MARKAKIS”

8/21/06: LINESCORE OF THE DAY – NOAH LOWRY

Had to give a shout out to my ole buddy Noah Lowry. I selected the lefty changeup artist in last year’s rookie draft for my Chicago Champions of the Illowa APBA League. Had to give a shout out to my ole buddy Noah Lowry. I selected the lefty changeup artist in last year’s rookie draft for my Chicago Champions of the Illowa APBA League. Then I included him in a deal along with a couple of high draft choices to acquire Mark Buehrle. Lowry seems to have his game altogether, while Buehrle has struggled to say the least. Although Noah was facing the offensively challenged Arizona Diamondbacks, a shutout is a shutout. Nice job by a pitcher I affectionately refer to as Whisper.

SOX DRIVE ME TO DRINK

The last time I posted about my Southside Heroes I was proud about the way they stepped up against the inept Royals 12-2 after taking five of six from NY & DET (sweeping the Tigers). This was an important series and anything less than a four game sweep would be a shame (actually three out of four would have been okay). Well I had to go and open my big mouth. KC behind Elvis Hernandez defeated the Pale Hose & Javier Vazquez 4-2. It was a game the Sox could have won, Joey Cora got Tadahito Iguchi nailed at the plate on a two out double by Jim Thome (Paul Konerko singled to leadoff the next inning) and Jermaine Dye dropped a flyball that allowed the Royals to score a run (but I’m not all over JD as that doesn’t happen very often & he’s so clutch).

The next night I was out at the Cell again to see KC jump out to a 10-0 lead as the Royals buried the Sox & Jose Contreras 10-4 behind junk baller, with Alex Cintron hitting a meaningless grand slam in the 9th for Chicago. But I was long gone by that time as I hopped the L to get out of there after the 7th inning stretch, we were only down by a TD when I left.

It was tough to get up for my 10th day in a row at the Cell, but I was back out there for the series finale having bought my ticket the night before. A beer vendor whom I’ve seen at Bulls games for 20 years sold me a cold one before the game, but not before giving me crap about this being the 1st beer I’d ever bought from him in twenty years. Things didn’t look good as David DeJesus hit Mark Buehrle’s first pitch over the leftfield wall to give the Royals a 1-0 lead, but then Sox leadoff man Pablo Ozuna tied the game in the bottom of the first. Emil Brown hit a leadoff homer in the top of the 2nd and Jermaine Dye hit a leadoff 2nd inning homer for Chicago to tie the game. First time in the history of baseball that’s ever happened. BIG BAD Bobby Jenks was called on to preserve the win. Ozzie Guillen walked Mark Grudzielanek to load the bases to get to Mike Sweeney, Sweeney hit an 0-2 grounder to Joe Crede who stepped on 3rd & fired to 1st to end the game 5-4. It was the 5th DP turned by the Sox on the day.

SENSITIVITY TRAINING IN ORDER?

Mike Scioscia Vicente Padilla drilled Vladimir Guerrero with a pitch, Guerrero hit a homer in his next at bat, Juan Rivera was hit by a pitch, and Padilla was ejected from the game. This all happened in a game won by the Angels over the Rangers 9-7 on August 15th. The next night all hell … Continue reading “SENSITIVITY TRAINING IN ORDER?”

Mike Scioscia

Vicente Padilla drilled Vladimir Guerrero with a pitch, Guerrero hit a homer in his next at bat, Juan Rivera was hit by a pitch, and Padilla was ejected from the game. This all happened in a game won by the Angels over the Rangers 9-7 on August 15th. The next night all hell broke loose when Texas pitcher Scott Feldman hit Halos secondbaseman Adam Kennedy with a pitch, Kennedy charged the mound, both benches emptied, and Feldman punched Kennedy in the armpit. The Rangers went on to win this contest 9-3.

Earlier this season White Sox skipper Ozzie Guillen was ordered to attend sensitivity training after he ordered a reliever Sean Tracey to nail a Texas hitter with a pitch after Vicente Padilla hit A.J. Pierzynski twice with pitches in a game. Tracey didn’t hit the Ranger batter, took a tongue lashing from Guillen, and was demoted to the minor leagues.

It looks like major league baseball would rather see a bench clearing brawl rather than see the players settle things on the field. It’ll be interesting to see whether sensitivity training will be in the offing for managers Mike Scioscia of the Angels and Buck Showalter of the Rangers.

RARE FEATS IN BASEBALL

Ichiro Suzuki On Monday night August 14th Justin Duchscherer picked Ichiro off first base to end the game and preserve a 5-4 Oakland A’s win over the Seattle Mariners. Jose Reyes
August 15th saw the Philadelphia Phillies defeat the NY Mets 11-4, despite Jose Reyes hitting three homers for the Metropolitans. Earlier this year the Mets lost a game in which Reyes batted for the cycle.

Ryan O’Malley
August 16th saw the Chicago Cubs win two against the Houston Astros. The first win came in 18 innings (the game started 8/15), with Rich Hill picking up the victory 8-6 in relief. Hill was supposed to have started the next day. As luck would have it, the Cubs minor league team was playing in Texas, so the Cubbies called up Ryan O’Malley who threw eight innings of shutout ball, as Chicago defeated Houston 1-0.

David DeJesus
Thursday the 17th of August saw David DeJesus homer on the 1st pitch of the ballgame to give KC the lead over the White Sox. The Royals went up 2-1 when the first batter in the 2nd inning Emil Brown hit a home run.

Pablo Ozuna
Remarkably ChiSox leadoff man Pablo Ozuna knocked one over the fence to tie the game in the 1st and Jermaine Dyes knotted the game in the 2nd when he hit a leadoff homer for the Good Guys in the bottom of the 2nd.

It was the first time in the history of baseball that leadoff hitters for both teams in the 1st & 2nd innings went yard. The White Sox went on to win the game 5-4 over the Royals.

ROOKIE WATCH: COLE HAMELS

The Philadelphia Phillies knew they had a pitcher when they drafted Cole Hamels in the first round of the 2002 draft out of Rancho Bernardo High School in Poway, CA. A few injuries have hampered his progress. He missed most of 2004 with an elbow injury. In 2005 he broke his hand in a bar … Continue reading “ROOKIE WATCH: COLE HAMELS”

The Philadelphia Phillies knew they had a pitcher when they drafted Cole Hamels in the first round of the 2002 draft out of Rancho Bernardo High School in Poway, CA. A few injuries have hampered his progress. He missed most of 2004 with an elbow injury. In 2005 he broke his hand in a bar fight before the season began, then hurt his back, and was shut down for the rest of the season. Now that this 22 year old lefty appears to be healthy he is a mainstay in the Phillies rotation. In his most recent start last night versus the first place NY Mets & Pedro Martinez, Cole & Philadelphia came out on top 13-0. Hamels allowed no runs, no walks, and only four hits over eight innings of work, while striking out nine. He was very impressive, throwing 86 of 113 pitches for strikes, in this snappy two hour thirty five minute drubbing. Cole has won three of his last four starts (only let up one run in six innings vs ATL in the game he lost), five runs in 28 1/3 innings of work. Hamels Minor League stats are impressive 14-4 record, 273 strikeouts, 35 starts. Look for this lefty to be the new Lefty in Philly.
