TWINS LOOKING GOOD AT CELL

I ended up not going to Motown to see the White Sox come back for a four game split against the Tigers, due to Oma’s broken hip (she’s doing better). I ended up not going to Motown to see the White Sox come back for a four game split against the Tigers, due to Oma’s broken hip (she’s doing better). But was able to see the Sox battle the Twins at the Cell in this past weekend’s three game series.

8/25/06: Javier Vazquez allowed “Little” Nick Punto’s 1st homer in the 6th inning, cutting the lead to 3-1. It should have been 4-1, but for “Waving” Joey Cora sending Ross Gload on a one out home plate suicide mission with leftfielder Jason Tyner easily gunning down Gload who would have scored on a Scott Podsednik’s fly to center if only he’d been held at 3rd. Then Neal Cotts was brought in to allow a 6th inning single to Justin Morneau, then David Riske was taken over the fence by Tori Hunter’s three run bomb, but A.J. Pierzynski knotted the game at four with a sixth inning solo blast off side arming righthander Pat Neshek. It was a tough one to lose when Jason Bartlett knocked in the go ahead run in the 9th, final score 5-4 MinnTwins. It was especially tough because we gave them an out when Joey sent Gload home and at least another when we allowed Javier Vazquez to start his 3rd time through the lineup, then brought in Cotts, and then brought in Riske. Ozzie Guillen needs to see the urgency of the situation.

8/26/06: Struggling Jose Contreras was facing “Mr. Automatic” Johan Santana. Rob Mackowiak, a lefthanded hitter, was in centerfield, despite lefty Santana on the mound. Mackowiak misplayed two balls that cost the Sox three runs. MVP candidate Jermaine Dye took closer Joe Nathan out for a two run 9th inning game tying blast, tied at 7. It was remarkable that we scored seven with Johan on the hill. Plus it could have been over, but Juan Uribe’s 9th inning error scored and Luis Castillo’s 9th inning great play in the field prevented a run from scoring. “Little” Nick Punto, batting righthanded, hit a two out shot off Ross Gload’s glove to score the go ahead run from 3rd. Gload was playing even with the bag at first, respecting the possibility of a push bunt. I felt a little guilty, having just yelled, “watch the bunt!”

8/27/06: Mark Buehrle allowed a first inning run. But this time the White Sox wore their hitting shoes, scoring twice in the 3rd. A.J. Pierzynski blasted a two run shot & Joe Crede knocked a solo drive in the 5th and then Juan Uribe put the game on ice with 6th inning a solo tater, all off starter Carlos Silva, 6-1 Good Guys. It was really tough to get out there for this one after playing give away the two nights before. After Saturday night’s game I said, there was no way I could do it again. But it was such a beautiful day, I couldn’t resist.

Couldn’t make it out there for any of the D*Rays series as my niece & nephew were in town and I travel to KC tomorrow morning at 6:00 AM to see the Sox & Yankees battle the Royals in back to back three game sets.

JUNIOR, NO CHARLIE HUSTLE

August 27, 2006: I was watching the Cincinnati Reds play the San Francisco Giants when Ken Griffey, Jr. stepped to the plate with two outs in the first to face Matt Cain. With that type of leadership, it’s no surprise the Reds lost this one 8-0.

What if you got 4 hits in a game and no one noticed?

Adam Dunn knows. Despite his 4 for 6 performance, he had no runs or rbis to show for his effort.

The Reds could have used a run or two more yesterday. The Dodgers eked out a victory 6-5.

Running the bases for autism

Tomorrow, Trenton Thunder (AA Yankees) assistant GM Greg Coleman will run the bases 500 times in an effort to raise money for autism research, education and advocacy.

Coleman’s son, Kevin was recently diagnosed with Pervasive Development Disorder (PDD), a form of autism.

Asssuming he’s not too tired, I think they’re going to have him back on again later this week to let them know how it went.

Update: Coleman completed his 500 laps today. He began at 7:;07am and ended at 2:32pm running over 34 miles. No word on how much has been collected so far. My guess is that the donations are still rolling in.

It’s been a while since I did a LSOTD. I better get on the ball. Oh, all right, I guess it’s Felix.

Felix Hernandez and Kelvim Escobar were involved in a pitcher’s duel. Felix came out the winner with his first career shutout.

Apparently, his coaches were telling King F that pitch location was more important than strikeouts. Not so good for his fantasy owners but then again if he pitches this well…

Papel-bet

The two younger twin brothers of Jonathan Papelbon, Jeremy and Joshua, have a friendly wager going. “Both the Spinners and the Hawks roster one of the Papelbon twins, little brothers of Boston Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon, who were both drafted out of the University of North Florida in last June’s Draft. “Both the Spinners and the Hawks roster one of the Papelbon twins, little brothers of Boston Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon, who were both drafted out of the University of North Florida in last June’s Draft. Left-hander Jeremy plays for Boise while right-handed submariner Joshua plays for Lowell.

The Papelbon Papel-bet will pit the twins against one another in a friendly wager based on their season-ending ERA’s. Whichever team’s Papelbon has the highest ERA loses and makes a contribution to the winning Papelbon’s charity of choice.”

I really think it’s great that they’re donating the money to charity. I also don’t doubt this is a good marketing move on Papelbons’ part. Not only is there an added incentive to pitch well but it keeps their name in the public eye.

Things I learned watching baseball tonight.

1. Dan Uggla hit his 20th homerun tonight. The Marlins have the chance to be the first NL team to have 3 rookies with 20+ homeruns. Josh Willingham has 19 and Mike Jacobs has 17. My question to you: What AL team did this? 2. Before today, the Arizona Diamondbacks ninth spot in the lineup … Continue reading “Things I learned watching baseball tonight.”

My question to you: What AL team did this?

2. Before today, the Arizona Diamondbacks ninth spot in the lineup has only 2 rbis less than the number 4 spot.

Their cleanup hitters have hit a grand total of 8 homeruns this year.

Granted, the nine hole includes pinch hitters and position players on the rare occasion when the DH is in effect against AL teams.

But still.

3. Orlando Hudson leads the D-backs in rbis since the All-Star break.

Nice start for Robbie at Daytona

I know it’s only been a few days but I thought I’d check in on how former Illini and newly acquired Cub catcher Chris Robinson was faring in Daytona. Well, he’s already making his presence known. Well, he’s already making his presence known. In his first game at Daytona, “the new guy” had 3 hits and 3 rbis.

Through four games, he is 6 for 17 with a double and a homer.

Bouton promoting new vintage baseball league

Jim Bouton, former pitcher and author of Ball Four, has a new project. He’s promoting a new vintage baseball league.

The league will be called the Vintage Base Ball Federation. Here is the VBBF web site. The league will base their rules and customs from the 1880’s time period.

Bouton appeared on MLB Radio’s Stayin’ Hot with Seth and Bone to promote his new project. Take a listen to his interview here (his interview is about halfway through the broadcast).

Of course, as a fan of the Vermilion Voles, I’m no stranger to vintage baseball. For the record, the Voles are part of the Vintage Base Ball Association which has been around for quite a few years.

The new VBBF is just starting out but has lofty goals. In his interview, Bouton envisions a World Series of sorts by 2007. Though it is very young, the league has the advantage of a recognized spokesperson and (presumably) some financial resources behind it.

Bouton was describing the method of play during his interview and mentioned that they use gloves similar to garden gloves. He did say there are “purists” out there right now playing by the rules of 1850’s who use no gloves at all.

I smiled and thought of the Vermilion Voles.
